History and Dreams

The working title for Stephen Potthoff’s Cadbury research is “Healing Dreams, Dreaming Earth: Friends, Visions, and Ecospirituality.” He tells us, “I plan…to investigate the role dreams play in the lives of early and contemporary Friends, both on an individual and communal level.” In addition to library research, he wants to facilitate a “dream sharing group” which would focus on “ecospirituality” and include reflection on “the dreams of early Friends, indigenous peoples, and many others as a starting point for sharing our dreams with one another.”
Meanwhile Pendle Hill’s 2010-2011 Cadbury Scholar, Doug Gwyn, researches and writes a history of Pendle Hill after 80 years. His research includes interviews, Pendle Hill pamphlets, and the wealth of materials available at Swarthmore College and Pendle Hill. Since receiving his PhD from Drew University in Biblical Studies and Homiletics, Doug Gwyn has written numerous books, including Seekers Found: Atonement in Early Quaker Experience, The Covenant Crucified: Quakers and the Rise of Capitalism, Unmasking the Idols: A Journey Among Friends, and Apocalypse of the Word: The Life and Message of George Fox.
Cadbury Scholars have the opportunity to experience worship, work, study, and service as members of Pendle Hill’s supportive resident community and have access to the Quaker collections at Swarthmore and Haverford Colleges.
